EFFECTIVE COMMAND LEVEL 1 OFFICER
A practical leadership course designed to prepare emerging officers to confidently manage the critical early stages of operational incidents.
Suitable for Lieutenants, Acting Captains, and Captains.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the key principles of the Incident Command System
Understand roles and responsibilities within the Incident Command structure
Apply effective risk management to operational incidents
Communicate clearly and effectively at incidents
Plan the initial operational response
Implement tactical actions to achieve operational objectives
Safely conclude the operational phase of an incident
Review and evaluate operational responses
Course Structure:
Delivered as either a 5-day block or weekend delivery format
3 experienced instructors
Maximum of 8 students per course
Students participate in 16 realistic incident scenarios
Course Content:
Technical instruction on initial incident command
Group-based scenario training
Each student will act as Incident Commander in two scenarios
Training scenarios include:
Virtual reality incident simulation
Simulated fire incidents
Extrication scenarios
HazMat incidents
Student-led debriefing
Continuous coaching and mentoring
Course scenarios and content can be tailored to reflect organizational risks, operational environments and local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
